Originally reviewed on LauraofLurkingI received a copy of this novel from AQ Press in return for an unbiased reviewStrong language SomeDrugs NoneViolence War, some graphicSexual content Several scenesI originally reviewed a copy of this novel in June, a large part of it, much of which I had issues with has since been rewritten, for what I think I a greatly improved book Any confusion in this review is due to having edited it to cover the changes better.A young man, Joseph, is looking for the name of his grandfather from an elderly spy who worked with his grandmother during the years when his mother would have been born This led to him hearing a deep and evocative tale that leave the reader reeling from emotions. We got into the meat of the story straight away, via several chapter long flash backs in person, whether it was the story of Nanette or Regina, aka the Queen, Joseph s Grandmother These were written very well and were immersive to the point that I forgot to take notes in some cases for the duration of several chapters These scenes felt very real and believable, the research was in depth You could feel the author s enthusiasm for this plotline. The characters were much the same They popped off the page, like they were in front of you at times I felt great care and attention had gone into these, especially mixing the fact that they were French, but making it easily understandable for an English speaking audience I always felt I had enough pre knowledge of what the situation was like in that area, what protocols were etc without ever having an info dump shoved in my face I did feel a couple of the bad guys, going under whatever name they were using for that division could have used a bitattention They felt a bit careless in the writing, almost as if the author knew she would kill of leave them behind a couple of pages later so didn t want to spend the time making an emotional connection. There were multiple sex scenes, most of which drew the plot along, but a few I felt were not used to their full potential to develop the plot Originally I felt some to be gratuitous, but I think this has been reduced a bit, leaving just enough to affect Joseph as Joseph he listened andoften than not squirming in his seat for one reason or another The timeline jumped back and forth every few chapters, giving us a view of Joseph as he tried to reconcile the Grandmother he knew with the spy he was learning he knew so little about I thought the relationship he developed with Nanette was very sweet, almost like a second chance at getting to know his Grandma. The 411I thought this was a lovely book, although it was about the was a D Day, it also covered life, love and loss I was sad to end it, despite the touching and fitting way it was done.I give this book 4 stars [E-pub] ☨ Code Name Nanette ☤ A Guilty Pleasure The Story Telling In This Book Is Amazing Ingrid Hall Exciting And Soul Searching ABNA Review A Fresh Voice, A Great Writer, I Literally Couldn T living in a Canadian nursing home, tells her story of being a spy for the Allies in France during World War II Nanette goes undercover as a prostitute to service German soldiers and coax military secrets out of them.At first I thought that her stories were really just an excuse to shock her listener with erotic stories, but as the book goes on I realized that her details about the intimate relationships were actually important to the story.CODE NAME NANETTE is a unique historical fiction set during World War II and I was surprised to learn that it is loosely based on real women spies during the war. An enjoyable bookCode Name Nanette is an intricate tale of two female spies in WWII France, what they endured and how their actions affect one s current day decendent Although it is rich in historical detail, the book is primarily a romance romances, actually hot, steamy romances Just saying The author has successfully crafted a genre I usually don t read into an enjoyable, fast paced book with historical and life lessons that I will not forget By the end, the unusual premise made perfect sense, and I was thoroughly engrossed and cared deeply about each and every character Highly recommended. Joe Parker is in search of information about his grandfather That s when he meets Nanette one of the only people that can help him answer any questions he has Nanette is a former spy during World War II and her story will help Joe learn not just about his grandfather, but also his grandmother, who is known as the Queen.Joe needed to figure out if what Nanette is saying is true, or if her story is just that a story He must listen through aspects of her life story he doesn t want to hear in order to gain the information he seeks.I really enjoyed this book it is a big change of pace from what I usually read I usually tend to stay away from books that involve history, but M.E Dawson writes a story that is the perfect mixture of history, humor, and romance You learn so much about the characters through flashbacks, and it helps show us how much the past can shape and effect who you are in life.Nanette makes this story You will love her just as much as I did She is an old woman reliving her past, but incorporates sarcasm and humor to her story She thrives off making poor Joe squirm while he listens and tries to find information about his grandfather While I didn t think it would happen, it is very easy to relate to all the characters, and I think that s what makes the story They talk about missed loves, and regrets Don t let the idea of this story being about History stop you from reading it You will really enjoy Nanette s story, and I promise you won t regret it I would highly recommend this story Code Name Nanette is a marvelous story, which had me hooked from beginning to end Reading it kind of became a guilty pleasure, and I actively started seeking out kindle time, just so that I could finish it The story opens in a contemporary setting, in which a young man called Joe Parker, desperate to find out the truth about his grandfather s identity, has tracked down a former British Spy, Nanette, an octogenarian, currently residing in a nursing home Nanette, in spite of her advanced years, is still a bit of a saucy minx and she soon has Joe wrapped completely around her little finger, as she tells the story of his grandmother, a.k.a Regina, or The Queen who served alongside her behind enemy lines in Nazi occupied France. The story telling in this book is amazing and I definitely felt that I had been transported back to 1940 s France The characterization is also flawless, with Joe, Nanette, and Regina as well as one or two other key players all being fully rounded If Joe was expecting to hear how his grandparents met during the war, then he was in for a shock because we get a full blown account of Regina s lesbian affair with a local doctor Far from being tasteless or tacky, this aspect really tugged at my heart strings Likewise Nanette s own lurid accounts of how she went undercover as a prostitute, servicing horny German soldiers for secrets had me riveted Oddly enough, I ve never thought of prostitutes as spies before, and this definitely added a whole new dimension to the story Joe s own love life is also a little complex, with his current girlfriend seeminglyinterested in his ex girlfriend than she is in him, but this is all by the by, as it is Nanette and Regina that drive and dominate the story. With this all said, I was RIPPING MY HAIR OUT IN FRUSTRATION at the book s ending, because it spectacularly failed to answer the one burning question that it had been asking throughout namely who was Joe s grandfather Either the author felt that this small detail was too insignificant to share or they got sidetracked, or I Dunno, kidnapped by aliens, but this totally ruined what had been an amazing reading experience for me The ending has pulled the rating from 5 Stars down to 3 Stars. Code Name Nanette by M E Dawson is a novel that fulfills the adage that fiction reveals truth in a way that is unavailable in mere facts The story occurs against the backdrop of World War II and depicts in vivid detail, not the bloody battles, but theintimate conflict of one on one encounters that confronted the brave women who operated as spies Using all of their skills including their sexuality, at great personal risk, they cobble together important intelligence that was pivotal to the allied victory Code Name Nanette provides some insight into the personal cost of that intelligence gathering. The reader experiences Nanette and Regina not as cold, calculating automatons but as living, breathing, loving and lusting human beings In the shadow of the moment to moment risk of death or capture, they come to live at an intensity that equals and then overcomes any fears they harbor While they struggle to fight for their values and the defeat of the Axis powers, they encounter moral choices that have no simple answers They inhabit a world of grey that shades to ebony Amidst this backdrop, they live and love, fight and survive, gather and report Heroes, certainly, for the most part, unsung, and anonymous their stories deserve to be told.M.E Dawson s lyrical writing captures the beauty and the horror of war, the intensity and passion with which people experienced life Whether it is a firearm pressed to an enemy s back, or the caress of a lover s tongue, M.E paints the moment in vivid prose War makes strange bedfellows FYI, includes vivid depictions of intimacy,
